Magdalene Olsdatter Midboe

The progenitor of the Middelboe family name

By Christian Sass Middelboe

When the Blue Book 1962 (And earlier versions as well) were made, they had a patriarchal attitude to things. And a notion that women could not carry on the Middelboe family name. This is clearly seen with regard to Karen Middelboe (The Blue Book no. 150) who has not been included in the family tree (The Blue Book p. 6) despite the fact that she had a son Hans Christian Middelboe (The Blue Book no. 153).

In the prehistory in Den BlÄ Bog, Ole Omundsen has been made our ancestor (Which he probably is too), but I would question the fact that he should be the originator of the name Middelboe. He married (And "bought") the name Midboe, from which the name Middelboe originates. (See The Blue Book p. 3). It was from Magdalene's family that the name Midboe originated.

It must be said in fairness that Ole, after buying Magdalene's birth farm in Sokndal Norway, takes the name Midboe. History does not say which of them, or whether it was jointly, chose to call their son Middelboe.

Contact has been made with the local historical museum in Sokndal about the possibility of obtaining information on exactly where Magdalene's birthplace was located. This has not succeeded in obtaining information at this time.

Family tree for Magdalene and Ole (Source: myheritage.dk), clearly shows that Magdalene is the progenitor of the name Middelboe.
